Breaking the cycle of needs through manipulation cards in a participatory futuring study
This project explored speculative design as a method for envisioning sustainable societal futures and examining the systems that shape everyday practices. Drawing on historical perspectives of technology and Shove’s critique of participatory design, the work investigated how rethinking social norms can open pathways toward more sustainable modes of living. Through the design of a co-design workshop, speculative design was used as a tool for collective futuring, integrating theoretical concepts such as Shove’s ‘cycle of needs’ to ground creative exploration in critical reflection.
