My goal for this course was to further develop and explore my competencies regarding speculative design as a means to envision sustainable societal futures.
I gained a more historical perspective on how certain technologies have shaped everyday practices, and current technologies still do. This course also introduced me to Shove’s critical view on participatory design that urges to rethink societal norms to enable more sustainable practices. This shifted my perspective, emphasizing the importance of designing systems that prioritize sustainable practices rather than starting with technology as the foundation.
Through designing a co-design workshop, I developed my competencies on using speculative design to support a creative futuring session to open-up thinking. Furthermore, we included Shove’s work in the workshop through ‘the cycle of needs’, creating more insight on how to design workshops embodying an underlaying theory.
This project taught me new ways of applying speculative design within a creative workshop, to tackle more societal issues.
