Exploring Expressive Ambiguity through
a Material-Oriented Design Approach

Course: Interactive Materiality

Material in my work mostly served to support conceptual ideas, but I wanted to learn how to actively engage with it throughout the design process.

Through this project, I developed a deeper understanding of how material can shape interaction. Using electronics, computing, and ambiguous forms, I designed an artefact with unexpected animalistic qualities. This process explored how materiality and interaction design can create symbiotic relationships, where both actors had to cooperate in the form of respecting each other expressions to be able to benefit from the interaction. The discussion on humanizing the artefact showed me how material and form influence interpretation, expanding my perspective on how material communicates its agency.

This experience reshaped my design vision, emphasizing the agency of artefacts and the decentring of the human user. It deepened my interest in posthuman design, connecting to broader ecological and philosophical contexts.
